Making Healthcare Better for People with IDD: IEC’s 2024 Impact Report

For too many individuals with IDD and their families, healthcare is still a source of harm and fear rather than healing. It's a system that still too often lacks the training, tools, and culture to serve people with IDD equitably. Changing this reality is not easy, but thanks to you, we made real progress in 2024.- Mai Pham, MD, MPH, President and CEO of IEC- Rick Gilfillan, MD, MBA, Board Chair of IEC2024 Impact Report IEC: Making Healthcare Better for People with IDD

At IEC (Institute for Exceptional Care), we believe people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) deserve healthcare that sees, respects, and supports them. In 2024, with your help, we made significant progress towards that goal.

We’re proud to share our 2024 Impact Report, which highlights how IEC is transforming the way healthcare is taught, delivered, and paid for, ensuring that people with IDD receive the person-centered care they deserve.

2024: A Year of Impact and Growth

Here are just a few of the ways IEC created change in 2024:

1. Driving systemic change with the ABC3 Roadmap

2. Equipping providers to deliver better care

  • Produced a 90-minute training course on caring for people with communication disabilities
  • Developed new resources to make dental practices more inclusive and accessible

3. Creating tools for self-advocacy

4. Building community leadership

  • Grew the IDD Advocate Corps from 30 to 90 members
  • Created new committees for self-advocates, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to collaborate on solutions

5. Shaping national conversations

Thank You

None of this work would have been possible without you – our partners, supporters, and self-advocates. Your support helps us train clinicians, develop new resources, and, most importantly, center the voices of people with IDD in healthcare.

Let’s keep moving forward together.
