April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to celebrate autistic people, honor their strengths, and advocate for a future where everyone belongs.
Autism acceptance means more than just knowing autistic people exist. It means valuing them, supporting them, and creating communities where they can thrive. Autistic people are leaders, parents, artists, coworkers, and friends. This month is a chance to recognize the insights, creativity, and joy they bring to our lives.
But this year, Autism Acceptance Month comes with new challenges. Just as it begins, the federal government is cutting programs that people with disabilities rely on, including autistic people.
These aren’t just budget decisions. They impact real lives, making it harder for people to get to medical appointments, access personal aides, or live independently. Critical services from the Administration for Community Living are at risk. And when HHS cuts the very data systems that help us understand and support autistic people, their needs become invisible.
At IEC, we believe in a healthcare system where people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are seen, heard, respected, and supported. The challenges in our present moment only deepen our commitment to that mission.
So this month, please celebrate and support the autistic people in your life. And if you want to do more, join us by speaking up, sharing your story, or making a gift to support our work. Your support means more now than ever.
